I am now a grandmother to six, four of which are girls. In UK schools, all girls are taught self defence, and boy has it made a difference to the self-confidence of girls these days, compared to the weak, submissive creatures we were in my day. Historically, sisters would often be dominated & bullied by their stronger brothers, but not these days: & definitely not in our family.

I found my 70yo husband hunched over on a garden bench last year, obviously in considerable pain. He had been playing with our two youngest girls and had teased them by holding a ball above his head so that they couldn’t retrieve it. One of them hadn’t hesitated to kick him between the legs, retrieving the ball as he fell, and then carried on playing while he curled up on the ground in pain. It was a powerful moment, & brought home the fact that the sensitivity of the testicles can totally negate the size & strength advantage that men have over us.

They are the perfect target for women in self defence, as they are the source of a man’s toxic masculinity, and their sensitivity is out of all proportion to any damage we are likely to cause them with a simple blow or squeeze!
